After earning the trust of eight adolescent female followers, a musician assaulted and sexually abused them. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

A musician has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for using his position as a guitarist in a band to target and rape adolescent female followers.

Between 2010 and 2016, Cassius Povey, 29, a well-known musician in the Midlands, preyed on the vulnerable victims during a six-year period.

Povey, of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, was apprehended in July 2020 after officers were alerted to his offences by a Facebook post, according to the court.

After capturing the trust of the adolescents as a “prominent and popular artist,” the serial sexual predator allegedly plied them with drugs and liquor, according to the court. He befriended the schoolgirls on Facebook who became admirers of his music before rapping or sexually abusing eight of them when they were only 14 or 15 years old.

Povey also raped a 19-year-old woman in a park before being apprehended when one of his victims spoke out on Facebook and police were notified.

Other girls responded on the page, claiming that Povey had mistreated them as well. Povey was arrested and charged with 19 sex offenses.

Following a trial, the musician was found guilty of two counts of raping a lady over the age of 16 and six counts of raping a girl between the ages of 13, 14, and 15.

He had already pled guilty to sexual behavior with a juvenile, grooming a kid under the age of 16, and enticing a girl to participate in sexual activity on nine charges.

Povey was sentenced to 17 years in prison and an additional three years on extended licence at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

Povey had showed no remorse, Judge Robert Brown added, and had ‘managed and manipulated’ the females to meet his sexual cravings.

‘In this case, all of the victims have found you to be manipulative and devious, and I have discovered that is exactly the type of person you are,’ he said.

Povey said in police interviews that he believed all of the girls were 16 or older at the time of the crimes and that all of the sexual conduct was consensual.

However, after an investigation by Leicestershire Police, more crimes perpetrated by Povey against females aged 13 to 15 were discovered.

‘While this sentence will not reverse the experiences these young girls had, I hope the knowledge that Povey will be behind bars for such a substantial amount of time provides some comfort,’ said Detective Constable Kev Sharkey of Leicestershire Police after the sentencing.

‘Today’s sentencing comes at the culmination of a long legal procedure in which all of the survivors have showed remarkable bravery, patience, and dignity.’

‘Their testimony has bolstered the case against Povey, ensuring that he gets the prison time he deserves.’

‘Cassius Povey preyed ruthlessly on young, vulnerable females, taking advantage of their vulnerabilities,’ said Matthew Thomas of the Crown Prosecution Service.

‘He saw that his lifestyle as a musician, with a large network of acquaintances, would be enticing, and he took advantage of it.

‘Despite appearing nice and even sympathetic, he had no concern for his victims’ well-being, taking what he wanted from them regardless of the consequences for their young lives.’

‘Because of his age and prestige, he was placed in a position of trust with these young individuals, which he abused by relentlessly grooming them and attempting to persuade them that he was not abusing them.’

‘We set out to show that there was no consent in all of these cases, regardless of what happened between them before or after.’

‘These survivors have had to confront some of their darkest moments.

‘Povey’s acts had a significant impact on them, and I am pleased that they have come forward, revealed the horrific reality of what happened to them, and that we have been able to expose Cassius Povey for what he is: a severe sexual predator.’

‘Today’s punishment demonstrates the extent of Cassius Povey’s manipulation and abuse of these survivors.’
