Mikel Obi, the Super Eagles legend, has been named Chelsea’s youngest centurion.

Chelsea has announced Mikel Obi, the former captain of the Super Eagles, as the club’s youngest player to reach 100 league appearances.

On its official website, the London club verified the news.

Mason Mount earned his 100th league appearance for the English club against Arsenal on Wednesday, and the announcement was made during the club’s celebration of him.

The England great was only 23 years and 100 days old when he reached the milestone for the Blues, but that was only good enough for him to become the fourth-youngest player to do so.

Mikel became the club’s youngest centurion when he started for the Blues in a 2-0 win over Arsenal on February 7, 2010 at the age of 22 years and 291 days, according to Chelsea’s website.

“In a 2-0 win over Arsenal, the club’s youngest player to reach a century of Premier League appearances was still two months shy of his 23rd birthday as he brought up the milestone,” the club noted.

“That was a recurring theme during the Nigerian midfielder’s tenure at Chelsea, as we often beat Arsenal.”

Mikel joined Chelsea in the summer of 2006, and in his first season, he made 22 appearances. He made another 29 appearances in the 2007/08 season, followed by 34 appearances in the 2008/09 season.

Before departing the Blues in 2017, he made a total of 249 appearances for the club.
