Miss Rwanda has been suspended due to claims of sexual assault.

Following an investigation into reported incidences of sexual assault in the pageantry, the Miss Rwanda competition has been halted till further notice.

The pageant was suspended after a pageant official was arrested for alleged sexual exploitation of contestants who had previously competed in the Miss Rwanda pageantry.

Dieudonne Ishimwe, a former artist known as Prince Kid, was arrested on April 27 for alleged “sexual assault related offences,” according to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).

The ministry of youth and culture issued a statement on Monday, May 9th, stating that “the Miss Rwanda beauty contest has been halted pending the completion of investigations” into the allegations against Ishimwe.

At the time of his arrest, RIB spokesman Thierry Murangira told AFP that the 36-year-old was facing charges of allegedly committing offences against former Miss Rwanda candidates at various occasions.

Miss Rwanda’s sex scandal was exposed after current Miss Rwanda, Nshuti Divine Muheto, recently spoke out and provided a recording of Ishimwe requesting sexual favors.

Ms Elsa Iradukunda, the Miss Rwanda 2017 winner, was also arrested by the RIB for allegedly attempting to hamper the ongoing investigations by using falsified documents.

According to sources, the former beauty queen, who is alleged to be dating the troubled pageant boss, has been pressuring victims who testified against Ishimwe to sign written documents stating that they have never been sexually abused by him.

According to its website, Miss Rwanda made her debut in the worldwide Miss World competition in 2016. It promotes itself as the most important beauty pageant in East Africa.
