Trump is incorrect in asserting that I had the legal authority to overturn the election – Former US Vice President Mike Pence

Mike Pence, the former US Vice President, has spoken out against his former boss Donald Trump, claiming that Trump was wrong to claim that he had the authority to reverse the 2020 election, as Trump claimed.

On Friday, February 4, Pence made the statement during a lecture to the Federalist Society in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

He immediately addressed Trump’s assertion – made last week Sunday – that Pence had the authority to ‘overturn’ the result.

‘However, some in our party feel that as the presiding officer of the Joint Session of Congress, I had unilateral authority to reject Electoral College votes,’ Pence added, referring to his own constitutional role overseeing the vote count on January 6, 2020.

‘I also heard this week that President Trump indicated I had the legal authority to overturn the election.’ ‘President Trump is incorrect,’ Pence declared.

‘I had no legal authority to annul the election.’ The president belongs to the people of the United States of America, and only the people of the United States of America.’

Pence reaffirmed the same point he made on January 6th, 2020, when he sent a thorough letter to lawmakers outlining why he lacked the authority Trump claimed, and that any such “unilateral” authority would be “antithetical” to the Founders’ idea of the balance of powers.

Following the letter, Trump said that Pence lacked “courage” and that he should have taken action.

Following that, a throng stormed the Capitol, with some yelling “hang” Pence for refusing to return electoral votes from states where Trump claimed fraud.

On Friday, Pence went even further, branding the idea of rejecting electoral college ballots as “unAmerican.”

‘And, frankly, no idea is more un-American than the thought that any single person might choose the president of the United States.’ I don’t have the power to modify the outcome of our election under the Constitution.’

He went on to say,

‘And when we beat them in 2024, Kamala Harris will have no authority to reverse the election,’ Pence declared to applause from the gathering.

‘Look, I understand how disappointed many people are with the election results. He joked, ‘I was on the ballot.’ ‘Whatever the future holds, I know we did our job that day,’ says the narrator.

His criticism comes after Trump hinted that he would pardon defendants on January 6th.
