“When we first started sleeping together, we had no idea we were doing anything illegal.” After having four children together, a brother and sister are battling to make incest legal.

A brother and sister who fell in love and had four children together have renewed their call for the repeal of incest laws so that their relationship can be legally recognized.

When Patrick Syuebing was attacked by their father decades ago, he was placed in a foster home in East Germany.

He reunited with his younger sister Susan Karolewski after more than 20 years apart.

After their mother, Ana Marie, died six months after re-discovering his biological family, Patrick, who was 23 at the time, and Susan, who is mentally challenged, began sharing a bedroom.

Their unauthorized union has resulted in the birth of four children, two of whom are seriously crippled.

In 2001, the pair began working to overturn German laws prohibiting siblings from having sex. They took their case to the European Court of Human Rights in 2012.

“We do not feel bad about what has happened between us,” Patrick was quoted as saying at the time. I became the family’s head, and I had to defend my sister.

“She is very sensitive, yet we helped one other through this terrible time, and our connection eventually became physical.” When we first started sleeping together, we had no idea we were doing anything wrong. We hadn’t considered using a condom.

“We had no idea sleeping together was unlawful.”

According to the Mirror, Patrick stated that their mother would “not have approved” of him and his sister’s relationship.

“We didn’t know each other in childhood, therefore it’s not the same for us,” Susan justified her relationship with her brother. We fell in love as adults, and it’s a genuine love. We couldn’t do anything about it.

“We were both attracted to each other, but nature eventually took over.” That was all there was to it. What other options do we have? We went with our gut impulses and hearts.”

Patrick is serving time in prison for breaking German incest laws, and the couple has carried their case all the way to the High Court.

Patrick has since had a vasectomy in an attempt to persuade the courts to let him live with his sister without risking extra jail time.
