‘Who are we to condemn?’ says Denzel Washington of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.

Denzel Washington has spoken out about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday night, after he was spotted consoling the Academy Award winner.

“When the devil overlooks you, you know you’re doing something wrong,” Washington said during a talk about his career and faith with author and bishop T.D. Jakes during his leadership summit on Saturday morning, according to Variety.

“The devil says, ‘Oh no, don’t bother him, he’s my favorite,'” he continued. “On the other hand, when the devil comes after you, isn’t it possible that he’s trying to accomplish something?” And the devil took a hold of that situation that night for whatever reason.”

During the commercial break that followed Smith hitting Rock across the face for a G.I. Jane joke made at his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Washington, Tyler Perry, Bradley Cooper, and others were seen talking to Smith.

Smith thanked Washington for delivering these insightful words during Will’s Best Actor winning speech: “At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.”

“Fortunately, there were people there,” the star of “Macbeth: A Tragedy” continued. Not just me, but others, such as Tyler Perry, rushed over to join me. Some prayers were said.

“I don’t wanna say what we talked about, but there but for the grace of God go any of us. Who are we to condemn? I don’t know all the ins and outs of the situation, but I know the only solution was prayer, the way I see it,” Washington added.

Smith’s actions have resulted in the actor resigning from The Academy in a statement released Friday. He also apologized to Rock for the incident.Denzel Washington

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.”
