Frank De Tank a.k.a. Frank Murugi, a Kenya-based Belgian TikTok celebrity, has been exposed as a fugitive drug lord.
In 2017, the 42-year-old TikTok star, who has over 1 million followers on the app, travelled to Kenya and rented a house in Milimani, Nairobi’s green suburbs, with his 22-year-old lover.
Frank, a father of two and a major suspect in one of Belgium’s most serious criminal investigations, was deported back to Kenya last week after allegations that he was wanted for allegedly raising Ksh.452 million (€ 3.5 million) in cocaine trafficking revenues.
His lavish lifestyle, on the other hand, prompted public and police scrutiny after he embarked on a spending binge, splurging money on supercars and high-end exotic resorts.
Frank and his comrade El Hajjioui Nordin were accused leaders of a ring that smuggled over 2000 tons of cocaine in 2015 and 2016, according to international media sources.
Nordin was allegedly sentenced to 40 years in prison in his absence, but he has since escaped to the United Arab Emirates.
Frank, who had previously worked as a dock worker in a Belgian port, was then detained and interrogated. Later, he agreed to cooperate with the authorities in the arrest of the drug trafficking ring. He was granted bail and travelled to Kenya in 2017. His re-arrest was the result of additional investigations.
On February 11, 2022, the trial of the TikTok celebrity, who faces a 12-year prison sentence, began.
