Franck Ribery, a former Bayern Munich winger, was ‘rushed to hospital’ after a car accident.

According to sources in Italy, former Bayern Munich great Frank Ribery was transported to hospital with a brain injury in the early hours of Sunday after being involved in a car accident.

When the accident occurred, the French international, who is presently playing in Serie A, was apparently a passenger in a car.

In a statement, his club, Salernitana, acknowledged that he will miss training while recovering from his injury.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the veteran was transferred to a hospital in Battipaglia after the accident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Salerno region. Since then, he has returned to his house to relax and recuperate.

Local authorities from Agropoli were also present at the accident scene, according to the newspaper.

“Footballer Franck Ribery, who was not driving the automobile at the time of the accident, suffered a minor head injury.” Salernitana issued a statement.

“As a precaution, the athlete will rest for a few days.”

The 38-year-old has appeared 16 times in the league this season, most recently in a 1-1 tie with Bologna over the weekend, where he played 71 minutes.

Ribery, who has 81 international caps for France and was a member of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad, spent the majority of his previous playing career with Bayern Munich.
