Gerard Butler ‘Disappointed’ by 50 Cent’s Shocking On-Set Behavior

Gerard Butler’s Hilarious ‘Disappointment’ With 50 Cent’s True Personality

When Gerard Butler signed on to star alongside 50 Cent in the high-octane heist thriller Den of Thieves, he expected to meet the notorious bad boy of hip-hop. Instead, what he discovered left him jokingly ‘disappointed’ – and revealed a side of Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson that fans rarely get to see.

The action-packed film featured the unlikely duo as robbers planning an elaborate heist, but it was their off-camera relationship that tells the more surprising story. Butler couldn’t help but laugh when describing his initial expectations versus the reality of working with the rap mogul.

Expecting a Villain, Finding a Gentleman

Given 50 Cent’s notorious reputation for celebrity feuds (his legendary rivalry with Ja Rule comes to mind) and his tough-talking hip-hop persona, it’s understandable why Butler might have anticipated some attitude on set. The 300 star admitted he was prepared to meet the rap villain that fans know from music and media.

Instead, Butler was genuinely surprised by what he discovered. “He’s actually a complete gentleman, he’s hilarious,” Butler revealed during an interview with NOVA’S Fitzy and Wippa. This unexpected side of 50 Cent completely contradicted his public image as hip-hop’s provocateur.

For his part, 50 Cent seemed perfectly content taking on the bad guy role in the film, telling The Breakfast Club: “I like the bad guy. I read the script six years ago. I don’t mind being typecasted. I’m a rapper. I don’t mind. My check’s the same. Gerard’s is a little bigger.”

The Birthday Call That Revealed 50 Cent’s True Character

What truly cemented Butler’s impression of 50 Cent as the opposite of his tough public persona was an extraordinarily generous gesture. When Butler reluctantly asked if 50 might record a birthday message for his girlfriend’s child, the rapper’s response blew him away.

“My girlfriend’s kid had a birthday and I asked maybe would he record a message. And I hate doing that kind of thing, you know, but this guy was like: ‘Not only am I going to record you a message, I’m going to call him in the middle of his birthday party,'” Butler shared.

But the “Candy Shop” singer didn’t stop there. 50 Cent went above and beyond, offering: “‘Are there any other artists that he likes because I’ll get them on the phone like that and I could even do a little thing and I could put them altogether!’ That’s who this man is.”

Butler’s Hilarious ‘Disappointment’

In a moment of comedy that perfectly captures Butler’s Scottish wit, the actor joked that 50 Cent’s extreme kindness was actually a letdown. He quipped that he would have preferred the rapper to live up to his tough-guy reputation.

“I was actually disappointed myself,” Butler joked. “I felt like slapping him about and saying: ‘When I ask you to do a video for my girlfriend’s kid, you tell me to go get lost, you don’t want to speak to me again and you don’t give a s*** about the kid.'”

Debunking the Rivalry Rumors

Despite their genuine camaraderie, Hollywood gossip mills churned out rumors of an on-set rivalry between the two stars. Both actors quickly stepped in to set the record straight, explaining that there was never any competition between them.

The Power creator explained that his involvement with Den of Thieves actually began years before filming, when he met director Christian Gudegast and producer Tucker Tooley. “[Gerard Butler] actually had the script at that point and I just got a chance to read it,” 50 Cent told Screen Rant.

Butler elaborated on how the misunderstanding might have started, revealing: “The second I heard that he was interested in being involved literally I was, you know Christian said ‘by the way Fifty really wants to do the movie and play Enson.’ And I’m like ‘no he doesn’t.’ And he goes, ‘no he does.’ I go ‘come on.’ And he goes ‘dude, he loves it, he really wants in.'”

However, Butler emphasized that he was thrilled about working with 50 Cent from the beginning: “So it was always different roles, but the second I knew he wanted to be involved, and then when I heard O’Shea Jackson wanted to be involved, then you go we got a movie.”

The Unlikely Hollywood Friendship

What emerged from their time on Den of Thieves was an unexpected friendship between two stars from completely different backgrounds. Butler, the Scottish actor known for intense dramatic roles, discovered a genuine connection with 50 Cent, the Queens-raised rapper who has built an entertainment empire.

Their story serves as a reminder that Hollywood personas often differ dramatically from real personalities, and that authentic connections can form in the most unexpected places – even between a Scottish action star and a rap mogul.

So the next time you see 50 Cent’s tough-guy persona in music videos or hear about his latest social media feud, remember there’s another side to him – one that would call a fan on their birthday and leave even Gerard Butler pleasantly surprised.
