Former Liverpool midfielder Arthur Melo has become the victim of a shocking daylight robbery while shopping in Barcelona. The Brazilian star, currently playing for Girona on loan from Juventus, was paying for a parking ticket when thieves struck in a well-orchestrated heist.
According to reports from Spanish publication Marca, the incident occurred around 4 pm on the upscale Passeig de Gracia shopping street. The 28-year-old footballer was left shaken but physically unharmed after the brazen theft.
The robbery appears to have been carefully planned by at least two perpetrators. While Melo was distracted paying for his parking, one individual jumped off a motorcycle and swiftly snatched the footballer’s luxury watch before speeding away with an accomplice waiting on the bike.
This type of theft, known as a “ride-by robbery,” has unfortunately become increasingly common in major European cities, with high-profile celebrities and athletes often targeted for their expensive accessories.
The midfielder immediately reported the incident to local police, though there’s been no report of arrests or recovery of the stolen item as of yet.
Shockingly, this isn’t the first time Arthur Melo has been targeted by criminals. Back in 2019, during his time with FC Barcelona, two burglars reportedly broke into his home and threatened his brother with a weapon while Melo was playing in a Champions League match against Liverpool.
During that previous incident, the thieves allegedly forced Melo’s brother to open a safe containing valuables, including jewelry and a Rolex watch. The break-in happened while Arthur was on the pitch for Barcelona’s 3-0 victory in the Champions League semi-final first leg.
This pattern of targeting professional footballers has become alarmingly common across Europe, with players’ schedules and whereabouts often publicly known, making them vulnerable to such crimes.
Despite this disturbing incident, Arthur Melo appears determined not to let it affect his professional commitments. Reports indicate he was back in training with Girona on Friday and is expected to feature in their upcoming match against Alaves on Saturday.
The Brazilian midfielder is working to rebuild his career in Spain after a disappointing spell in the Premier League. Melo’s loan stint at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp two seasons ago was largely unsuccessful, with injuries limiting his impact at Anfield.
Now at Girona, on loan from Juventus, he’s hoping to regain the form that once made him one of Brazil’s most promising midfield talents. This personal setback comes at a time when he’s focusing on proving himself once again on the pitch.
This incident raises further questions about the security measures professional athletes need to consider in their daily lives. With their high profiles and valuable possessions, footballers increasingly find themselves targets for opportunistic thieves.
Many clubs are now providing additional security guidance to their players, especially those with high-profile jewelry or watches that can make them targets in public places.
As Arthur Melo continues his recovery from this unsettling experience, the football community will undoubtedly be watching to see how he responds both personally and professionally to this latest challenge.
